Comply with your ethical obligations

Arranging a continuity of care plan and clinical will is uncomfortable, but the reality is that it is essential to ensure that you comply with the BACP’s ethical guidelines, and that your clients continue to receive the standard of care they expect and deserve.

No-one wants to think about the possibility of circumstances where they are no longer around for their clients, which is why we’ve set out to make it as easy as possible to nominate your clinical will executors via Counselling Buddy.

How does it work?

You can create as many clinical will executors as you need, by navigating to Settings > My Account, where you will then see the Clinical Executors section.

When you create a clinical will executor, you have full control over the information that they can access, and how they access it. Once you click save, they are sent an email explaining that they have been appointed as a clinical will executor, Counselling Buddy’s role in your clinical will, the information they have access to, and how they can activate the clinical will process.

You are also sent an email, informing you that a new clinical will executor has been added to your account.

How do my clinical will executors access my information?

Should a situation arise where one of your clinical will executors needs to activate the clinical will process, they will need to follow the instructions found in the email they were sent informing them that they have been appointed as a clinical will executor, or email us via support@counsellingbuddy.com for assistance.

Once they activate the process, we start a 7-day countdown, and notify you each day that a request to access your information has been made. The notifications will be sent via Email and SMS, using the email address and phone number linked to your account. Each notification will allow you to perform a one-click override, rejecting the request to access your information. This will terminate the clinical will process.

If we have not heard from you by the end of the 7-day period, we will facilitate access to your information, in line with the permissions you granted to the clinical will executor when adding them to your account.

What information will my clinical will executors have access to?

When you add clinical will executors to your account, you have full control over what information they will be granted access to. It is important that you properly consider what information they need to access in a clinical will situation, and ensure that you have granted them the appropriate permissions.

We recommend that you have at least one clinical will executor who has full access to your information, to minimise disruption to your clients’ care, though also recommend that you are thorough with your permissions and understand exactly what information you are granting access to.

Important: We will never override the permissions you have granted to your clinical will executors, so it is important that you have provided enough access to the right executors to ensure continuity of care for your clients. It is a good idea to discuss this with your supervisor if you aren’t sure who should have access to what information, as they are likely to best understand your ethical obligations.

How can my clinical will executors contact my clients?

We have a client-information access option to only allow your clinical will executors to email your clients via Counselling Buddy, without seeing their names or contact details. This will allow your clinical will executors to keep your clients informed of the situation, and invite them to contact your executor, without revealing their identity or personal information.

Alternatively, you can provide your clinical will executors with access to your full client information, including their names and contact information, which they can use to contact your clients directly.
